FIGHTING HIS INSTINCTS
Allison walks Brooks in and out of some shallow water. “A horse’s instinct is to fear water and ditches,” explains Lucinda. “If they get stuck in a bog or hole in the wild, they’d be dead, so it’s an instinct you’re fighting.” A log followed by three strides to the water is next. “Give yourself time to find your line early so he sees the log, then spots the water and has a chance to put his focus back on the log. Keep your leg on so he doesn’t stop.” Brooks hesitates, but goes. “Staying in trot can help when they’re a bit green. It gives them more time to look and feel,” says Lucinda. Allison and Brooks canter through the water to finish.
