Top tools Make a dull coat dazzle Removing mud

QI prefer my horse to live out as much as possible in the winter and he’s not the type that needs rugging. How can I keep his coat tidy? Peter Smith, Rugby Jenny says... Trying to keep on top of the mud can be a nightmare. One easy way to prevent mud from sticking to the coat is to use a show sheen-type spray on his tail (I like Mr Sheen furniture polish, which is an affordable option), as it will deflect mud. This type of product can also be used on other parts of the body, but beware it can make your reins slippery and your saddle slip if used in those areas. To work off mud that’s already stuck to the coat, use a hard plastic curry comb in circular movements. It’s great for removing mud and good old-fashioned elbow grease is the best way to remove all the dirt your horse has had fun rolling in.
