IT’S NOT ALL BLACK AND WHITE

-

The Grevy’s is the largest of all the wild equids, with an adult male weighing around 450kg and standing 5ft 3in at the shoulder. Grevy’s feed mainly on grasses but they will also eat bark, fruit and leaves. They spend between 60% and 80% of their day foraging. The stallions have the largest territories of any living herbivore, at up to 10 square kilometres. Grevy’s are also known as ‘The Imperial Zebra’. A newborn zebra will follow anything that moves, which causes new mums to be highly aggressive towards other mares who may try to lead their youngsters astray. In the wild, Grevy’s live for about 20 years. In captivity, this can extend to as long as 40 years. Foals feed heavily for a year-and-a-half and travel with their mother for around three years. They don’t drink any water until they’re three months old.
