‘I’m feeling the joy of riding again’
I purchased Muppett from a local riding school. He was the advanced schoolmaster there, 19 years old, a warmblood, 16.3hh and full of character. A huge step up for me. Muppett and I enjoyed a wonderful relationship over the next five years. We carried on competing at local events and hacking out until just two weeks before he was put to sleep. I was devastated when I lost him and it took me some time to even think about riding. So, I gave myself time to grieve. I started to ride again, but found myself lacking confidence, having lost the trust I’d built with my own horse. I tried having private lessons, but initially they made it worse and I felt the loss of ‘my boy’ even more. Then I weighed up my options — should I give up or try something else? I wanted to recreate the fun element of a group lesson, so I contacted a local reputable yard and joined a returning riders’ group who were so welcoming. Gradually, by riding different horses, my confidence has returned and I’m feeling the joy of riding again. I will never forget Mr Muppett and all that he taught me, but now I have a new group of friends and I’m pleased to say that I think I’m ready for another horse and some new adventures.
