This first exercise shouldn’t be difficult for your horse. Holding him with one hand, touch his inside hind leg with the whip, which is held in your other hand. “You’re looking for him to step over with his inside hind,” explains Ben. “His shoulders will move away slightly too, but keep control of them. “Be happy with one or two steps at first, then stop and praise him. He may get stuck if he’s unsure what you’re after, but keep asking, and with timely use of “good boy”, he’ll soon understand. “This is the sort of work that should ideally be started at two years old, to prevent problems arising in the future.”
