A blossoming friendship between a rescued pony and her young rider has resulted in showing success. Since finding a new home through Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s rehoming scheme, Redwings Fern has taken her local showing scene by storm, picking up rosettes and winning the Best Rescue Class at The Aylsham Show. New Forest cross Fern was just three months old when she was rescued alongside her mum Forest in 2005. Redwings received a report of a poorly foal with an eye condition and sent a field officer to investigate. After speaking to the owner, Fern and Forest were signed into Redwings’ care so she could receive the treatment she desperately needed. Happily, Fern made a full recovery and grew into a lovable pony, making her the ideal candidate to be trained as a lead-rein pony as part of Redwings’ rehoming scheme. In March 2018, she found a loving home with Danielle Pye, and soon became best friends with her new young rider, Danielle’s son Jayden, who’s five. When not impressing in the show ring, the pair have fun hacking, exploring their village and nearby forest, and participating in gymkhana games. Danielle said: “Fern has become such a big part of our family. We all love her cheeky, pretty face. I was so proud of them at The Aylsham Show I nearly cried. Fern behaved impeccably, and Jayden rode her beautifully. She is our special little lady, and I think she’s quite fond of her little person too, as she calls out to Jayden when she sees him.”
