MEDIUM WORK
Medium work covers the professional competition horse or aspiring amateur’s horse. It includes intense training and competing on a regular basis, including some fast work. A typical level of competition or training would include dressage (elementary to advanced), showjumping (newcomers, Foxhunter), eventing (novice and intermediate), endurance novice level (30-50km).
Feeding strategy
Even though your horse’s energy requirement will start to increase, make sure his diet is still based on forage, at least to the minimum requirement mentioned in ‘light work’. You may want to consider a higher-energy hay, haylage or forage alternative, as well as a medium-energy feed designed to support competition horses. For fizzy types, or those requiring a low-starch diet, look for feeds based on highly digestive fibre sources and oil.
