BEFORE HUMANS TOOK charge, horses lived on vast areas where they roamed day in, day out looking for food. They might be growing colts, pregnant mares, a foal at foot, or a stallion protecting the herd. A very different life to our own horses who do little moving around by comparison, live in lush paddocks and have food on tap (room service, anyone?). Wild horses would get fat in the summer in order to survive the winter when food was limited. Come spring, they would have lost this weight and the cycle would start again. Today most horses don’t lose weight in winter as we feed them to make sure that they don’t, yet their metabolism is still geared up for feast then famine. So increased food and less exercise results in… yes, you’ve got it, a particularly unhealthy lifestyle.

Our new, unique, year-long campaign ‘Fit Not Fat’ is designed to lift the lid on modern management and put us all on track to have fit, slim and happy horses in the future.
