❋ They vary from 14.2hh to 17hh.

❋ Some Friesians carry the ‘red’ gene so chestnuts are occasional­ly seen.

❋ In the 18th and 19th centuries they were popular as carriage horses and for trotting racing, as well as being used in agricultur­e, but the breed subsequent­ly went into decline. ❋ In the early 20th century there were only three breeding stallions.

❋ Friesians make up about 7% of the horses in the Netherland­s today.
