THE USE OF RUGS
One thing you can do right now is look at your rugging routine. According to the British Equine Veterinary Association, owners believe that their horse requires a rug in all but the mildest of weathers. But the use of rugs limits energy loss and rugs should be avoided where possible. Loss of weight in winter is normal and should be encouraged if your horse has gained weight during the summer. If your horse is clipped, assess him regularly and use the lightest rug you can.
