PRINGLE
Problem: PPID (Cushing’s disease) and resulting low grade, chronic laminitis.
Pringle originally lived in a traditional set-up of stabling and turnout. However, his laminitis persisted, with multiple event lines showing on his hooves — one of the big clues to a metabolic issue.
His owner was able to set up a track system at a DIY livery yard. She created a simple track where Pringle mostly ate soaked meadow hay as his source of forage and increased his daily movement. He was confirmed as positive for PPID and, to date, has been managed without the need for medication. He has since moved on to a purpose-built track at the owner’s home and continues to do well in his mid-20s. A track system obviously can’t ‘cure’ PPID, but management with non- inflammatory feeds can mean the body has a better chance of regulating itself.
