Ex-forces horses
QWhen and how are military horses retired? Charles Smith, Kensington
Paddy says... We look to retire our horses at around 20 years of age. This will mean, for most, a career of between 13 and 15 years. On retirement, soldiers and officers can write a letter asking to be considered for subsequent ownership — sometimes this offer is extended to members of the public. However, should a horse have a medical complication or behavioural issue, they will be taken on by The Horse Trust, a charity that looks after retired military and police horses.
