Managing sweet itch
The best control is to use a special sweet itch rug that covers your horse’s head, neck, belly and dock. The key is to start using the rug before sweet itch takes hold. It’s also important that the rug is used continually whether your horse is in his stable or turned out.
Lotions and potions
Applying an insecticide to the susceptible areas of the body can help. There are a huge number of skin lotions, creams and washes on the market, most of which are a combination of repellent and insecticide. Benzyl benzoate is a compound found in many sweet itch preparations. All-natural products are available too. Always follow the instructions to give them a chance to work.
Feed supplements
Dietary supplements are another option, but while they may aid control they will never be sufficient on their own. Research in Canada indicates that feeding linseed (cooked linseed or feed-grade linseed oil) can reduce the irritation caused by midge bites.
