WHAT A GOOD IDEA…

Flower power

I didn’t have a spare vase and so used a plastic tennis ball tube instead, taking off the outside wrapper. I decorated it with a pink and silver cord. Lena Waites, Co Durham

Hear hear

When travelling I used to find my earrings would get tangled up if I took them in little bags, so I bought a medium-sized tablet dispenser and put a pair of earrings in each section. I can see which I want to use and remove them easily. Jeanne Mardling, Herts

Juicy story

I buy tinned fruit in natural juice and use this when making porridge. Healthier than sweetening with sugar. C Heed, E London

Incy Wincy Henry

I always seem to run out of time when getting ready. This morning was no exception, due to a spider I’ve named Henry who appears in my shower most days. Henry is the daddy long legs variety, and I’ve grown quite fond of him. Switching on the shower and about to step in, I spotted Henry struggling to survive in the water building up in the shower base. Horrified, I dived in to rescue him, soaked my hair in the process, and had to spend the next 20 minutes sorting it out. Of course, I arrived late for my appointment. But I left Henry nicely drying out on a shelf in the bathroom, safe to live another day. Beryl Mitchell, Nottingham

Proper knees up

I took my neighbour to the doctor when he complained of a very sore knee. After a thorough examination the doctor told him that he could find nothing wrong with it other than old age. My elderly friend thought about this for a moment and then informed the doctor that he didn’t think that could be the case as his other knee was the same age and he didn’t have any pain in it at all. Mrs E Thompson, Belfast

Junk the jeans

For once I am going to disagree with you, Yours, and your comments praising denim jeans for older women. I think jeans should only be worn for work, not as a dress outfit. I cringe when I see people wearing jeans at functions. On a TV programme the other day a mother and daughter actually went on the stage in jeans. What has happened to wearing skirts? Suits you

In a contribution to a recent Fashion We Wore, there was a lovely photo of a reader wearing a Hebe sports suit. She wondered if anybody else remembered that name. Well, what memories that evoked. I used to be an assistant in a ladies’ fashion shop, Belle Bakers, of Maidenhead. Suits made by Hebe Sports were popular with our clientele because they were so well tailored. In those days, all young ladies loved to look smart and completed their outfit with a close-fitting half-hat and, of course, gloves. As your correspondent said, “Happy Days”. Eileen Hedges, Devon

By appointment

I couldn’t resist sending in this notice I saw on the Isle of man… (see picture, left). Jacqui Kimber, West Yorks
