Films we loved make a comeback

Popcorn at the ready as some of our favourite films of yesteryear get set for a new version – but can they ever compare to the originals?

- By Katharine Wootton

When it comes to the films we love to snuggle down for time and again on a relaxing afternoon, the oldies are definitely the real goodies. But now a collection of cinematic classics and cult movies from decades past are about to return to our screens once more as many get a remake for the modern day. From cult Seventies hits to comforting comedies, we take a look at the reboots currently marked for production. But as for whether they can ever capture our hearts and imaginations quite like the originals we love, well that remains to be seen…

THE BIRDS

It’s one of the most gripping and grisly Hitchcock movies around and had us cowering at the sight any birds we saw in the park! Loosely based on a 1952 short story by Daphne du Maurier, the 1963 classic film told the story of a seaside town held hostage by hellish flocks of birds. Now a remake is on the cards, helmed by Michael Bay, who made his name directing science fiction film Transformers and Pearl Harbour. Given Michael is well-known for his penchant for mind-bending special effects and detonating massive explosions, it’ll be interesting to see how he navigates the more subtle complexity of Hitchcock’s original. With all kinds of fancy modern technology at his fingertips, can he really make a sky full of crows even more frightening, or will the mystery and intrigue of the original be pecked away by special effects? Meanwhile, we’re anxious to see who could master the main role of Melanie Davies which the wonderful Tippi Hedren made her own when she played the original San Francisco socialite, whose immaculate hair-do is spoiled within minutes of arriving in North California! Currently, rumours have Naomi Watts lined up for the part.
