At the double

I wonder if other readers have found the same problem as me? You don’t seem to be able to buy a proper pair of pillow slips any more for a double bed, only two pillow slips that are the same. This means you must always have one pillow with the opening to the middle of the bed and the other to the outside unless the pattern is neutral. Sheila Pow, Peterborough

Talk Talk

I’m quite a chatterbox, but a recent illness has meant that I get quite breathless when I talk a lot. I was telling a friend of mine how hard it is not to talk so much and she said, “Oh dear Pat, that must be difficult for you as talking is your hobby.” Pat Rose, Devon

Charity for who?

I’ve shopped for years in charity shops, but I’ve noticed they seem to be pushing their prices up. I know it’s all for a good cause but the prices they are charging these days are ridiculous. I was always of the opinion that charity shops were not only there to make money for their organisation but also to help the poorer people in their local communities. I can now find clothes cheaper in shops. Anna Hammett, Cheshire

Say again?

When I was young I used to go to my aunt’s house in the next street to do some baking for her. One day there was a knock on the door and before I could get there, my aunt, who was a bit deaf, was at the door and I heard raised voices. I saw the door about to close on a bewildered man with a red face. “What’s going on?” I enquired. “He wants me to join the Tennis Association – me with my arthritic knees and hardly able to walk,” said my aunt. She went to put the kettle on and the poor man explained: “I said Tenants’ Association. We just want to know if she has any complaints we could help her with.” Audrey Thompson, Northumberland
