IS ENERGY DECLINE NORMAL?
many of us put our lack of energy down to our age, assuming that a drop in vitality is natural as we get older. but that isn’t necessarily the case. even while you’re sitting reading this your body is producing enough energy to power seven ten-watt light bulbs. most of that energy is generated by tiny structures called mitochondria present in all your body’s cells. they are the energy powerhouses in your body, turning fat, sugar and protein from your food into energy by mixing it with oxygen. your mitochondria also make something called adenosine triphosphate or AtP which is a molecule that takes energy where it is needed in your body. “As we age there are some natural changes in our mitochondria and in our ability to make AtP,” says dr Annie Curtis, a biochemist and l’oréal-unesCo For Women in science Fellow for 2017. “but our lifestyles probably have more of an effect on how energetic we feel and we should pay more attention to what we’re eating, how much we exercise and sleep and how we deal with stress to give ourselves a boost.”
