I’ve noticed recently the popularity in holiday brochures for dog-friendly venues. My parents managed a pub for many years before they retired and we were definitely dog friendly. Licensing hours in the Sixties were 10.30am to 3pm and 6pm until 10.30pm. The morning session was mostly made up of elderly retired men and for some, their only companion was their beloved dog. They were always a great starting point for conversations with customers and would get everyone talking. The highlight of the year for the dogs was Christmas as I made them doggy biscuits and chewy sticks. This photo shows me with two of the dogs – Sherry the Labrador and Alfie

the Great Dane. Memories of happy days. Evelyn Timperley, Gateshead
