US cop show dou­ble acts

On the 30th an­niver­sary of the last episode of Cag­ney & Lacey, we re­mem­ber their amaz­ing part­ner­ship and look at some other favourite US po­lice pairs from the past

Can you be­lieve it’s re­ally 30 years since Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly last walked the mean streets of New York as Cag­ney and Lacey? The true chalk and cheese of the cop world, one was an in­de­pen­dent ca­reer woman who liked knee-high-boots and a drink. The other was a work­ing-class, mar­ried mother try­ing to jug­gle ev­ery­thing. But to­gether they were the most for­mi­da­ble fe­male duo we’d ever seen on­screen at the time. And de­spite their dif­fer­ences, what we loved most was the un­shake­able friend­ship be­tween th­ese two women who re­lied on each other for their lives and sup­ported each other through ev­ery­thing from preg­nancy scares to breast can­cer. Cag­ney & Lacey was so wellloved, when it was can­celled twice through­out its run from 1982-1988, pub­lic outcry got it back on the box. It launched the ca­reers not only of its stars, but also many of its fe­male screen­writ­ers, as well as open­ing the door to the likes of ITV’s Scott & Bai­ley. As a crime-fight­ing duo, they were up there with the best, along with th­ese other po­lice part­ner­ships we adored…
