– if disability or illness means you need help at home you can claim Attendance Allowance. Call 0800 731 0122 or visit gov.uk/attendanceallowance COUNCIL TAX SUPPORT – for those on a low income or in receipt of certain benefits. WINTER FUEL PAYMENT – if you were born on or before Nov 5, 1953, you can get an annual payment of £100-£300 for heating costs. Call 0800 731 0160 or visit gov.uk/winter-fuelpayment. Contact your utility supplier to see if you are entitled to £140 off your electricity bill under the Warm Home Discount Scheme.
2 Clear debts
Speak to Citizens Advice Bureau (03444 111 444 in England or 03444 772 020 in Wales) or National Debtline (0808 808 40000)
3 Check your mortgage
– to see if interest rates have changed or if your property has altered in value (use www.zoopla.co.uk). If you still have a mortgage, check if it’s a good deal at www.moneysupermarket.com/mortgages
4 Keep track
Try piggy banking Put your money into separate accounts, each with a different purpose (one for bills, one for holidays, one for emergencies) and set up standing orders from your main account to feed these piggybanks each month/year.
