– if disability or illness means you need help at home you can claim Attendance Allowance. WINTER FUEL PAYMENT – if you were born on or before Nov 5, 1953, you can get an annual payment of £100-£300 for heating costs. Call 0800 731 0160 or visit gov.uk/winter-fuelpaymen­t. Contact your utility supplier to see if you are entitled to £140 off your electricit­y bill under the Warm Home Discount Scheme.

2 Clear debts

3 Check your mortgage

– to see if interest rates have changed or if your property has altered in value (use www.zoopla.co.uk). If you still have a mortgage, check if it’s a good deal at www.moneysuper­market.com/mortgages

4 Keep track

Try piggy banking Put your money into separate accounts, each with a different purpose (one for bills, one for holidays, one for emergencie­s) and set up standing orders from your main account to feed these piggybanks each month/year.
