RECYCLED JUMPER

-

If you’ve accidentally shrunk your favourite jumper in the wash, don’t throw it away, here’s a fun new use for it!

Time: 1-2 hours Skill: Beginner

MATERIALS:

Woollen sweater (at least 90 per cent wool) Plain drum lampshade and light Sharp scissors

Pins

Matching sewing thread

1. Even if your sweater has already shrunk, felt it by washing it in the washing machine on a hot (90°C) wash. Leave to dry. This will prevent it from fraying when cut.

2. Measure your plain lampshade and cut out a rectangle of fabric to cover it. Make sure it’s a couple of inches larger than the shade on both sides.

3. Pin the jumper around the lampshade.

4. While the shade is still in place, using a double length of matching sewing thread, stitch a long running stitch around the excess fabric, close to the top edge. Pull the threads tight to gather the fabric and then sew in the ends. Repeat around the bottom edge.

5. Finally, slip-stitch down the side seam to secure and remove the pins.
