TRAVEL WITH A DIFFERENCE

Hit the road – or beach, even – with a campervan. Opt for a retro-style VW or more modern transport packed with all sorts of state-of-the-art wizardry

-

A quirkier way to get around…

You could enjoy the freedom and comforts of a home and save money on accommodation in the long run, with one of these options:

Campervanning

From a hippy VW to a state-of-the-art bus, campervans are an increasingly popular way to travel. They’re easier to drive and park than a motorhome and often cheaper, too.

You’ll need to plan ahead where to camp every night (see www.pitchup. com for the best camping spots) and be a bit frugal on your packing.

If you want to try before you buy, hire a campervan with Bunk Campers (0289 081 3057/www. bunkcampers.com) for modern vans, or O’Connors for retro VWs (01837 659599/oconnorscampers.co.uk).

If you decide to buy, always check the vehicle’s history and inspect it fully – the AA offers a one-hour inspection and road test for a fee if you want to be absolutely sure.

Canal boating

If Prunella Scales and Timothy West’s Great Canal Journeys has got you hankering after narrowboat escapes, consider investing in a canal boat to see the world from the waterways. Boats come at varied prices so think about a budget, and how big you need it, depending on how often you’ll use it. Go down to your local canal and speak to other boaters about running costs and if permanent moorings – which are often in short supply – are available where you want them. If you fancy hiring a boat first, try LeBoat– 02392 801396/ www.leboat.co.uk
