“Public Health England recommends that free sugars make up no more than five per cent of our daily calories – that’s around 30g of sugar, or seven teaspoons,” says dietician Helen Bond. “Free sugars are those added to food either by you, or by a manufactur­er, in foods such as jam, fizzy drinks, cakes and biscuits.”
