‘You are never too old to exercise’

Hannah Smith shares her experience and tips on how exercise can really benefit those with mobility issues

-

When Hannah Smith was a little girl, she knew there was something different about her Uncle Brian. He was always the life and soul of the party but Hannah used to wonder why he couldn’t walk far and his hands used to shake. Brian had Parkinson’s Disease but Hannah just knew him as one of her favourite uncles.

Hannah trained as a dance teacher and always planned to teach disabled people, but now she is specialising in helping people with Parkinson’s and their carers to make the best of life. She runs regular dance and exercise classes and has recently joined the Yours Carers in Touch scheme to encourage people to take up some exercise.

“My Uncle Brian has been my inspiration,” says Hannah. “Sadly, he has died now but I know how much he wanted to enjoy life in spite of his problems. It’s always possible to do some form of exercise, even if people are confined to their

homes.

“Simple exercise helps anyone with mobility issues to have better balance, helps with co-ordination and releases feel-good endorphins. If someone can’t walk, they can sit in the garden for a few minutes; it will do them good. Just being outdoors is relaxing.”

Hannah says it often takes courage for people and their carers to go to an exercise class for the first time.

“People often think if they have mobility problems that they can’t exercise and that everyone at a class will be better than they are. Everyone can do something – even while sitting in a chair at home. If you do pluck up the courage to join an exercise group, you’ll be sure to find friendship and support.

“Exercise is important for carers too as it helps release stress. Carers need to look after themselves because if they become ill, they won’t be able to care any longer.

“I hope I can encourage people to try some simple exercises even if it’s at home.

You’re never too old to start exercising and I guarantee you will feel better if you do.

“I hope my uncle would be proud of the fact that I’m now devoting my life to supporting people with Parkinson’s.”
