4 x 3-tr blocks x 4.5 rows = 10cm (4in) in stitch patt, using 6mm (UK 4) hook.

FOR THE BLANKET

Using a 6mm (UK4) hook and yarn A, work a foundation ch of 6 sts.

Row 1: 1tr in 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each of next 2 sts. 1 x 3-tr block.

Row 2: Turn work, ch6, 1tr in 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, sl st in ch sp on block from previous row, ch3 (counts as 1tr), 3tr in same sp. 2 x 3-tr blocks.

Row 3: Turn work, ch6, 1tr in 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, sl st in ch sp on first block from previous row, ch3 (counts as 1tr), 3tr in same sp, sl st in ch sp on 2nd block from previous row, ch3 (counts as 1tr), 3tr in same sp. 3 x 3-tr blocks.

Cont in patt as set for a further 20 rows, 23 rows in total.

Yarn B for 4 rows. 27 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn C for 4 rows. 31 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn B for 4 rows. 35 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn C for 4 rows. 39 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn D for 3 rows. 42 x 3-tr blocks. Begin decreasing Cont with yarn D, turn work, sl st in 3 sts on first block in row, *sl st in ch sp on next block from previous row, ch3 (counts as 1tr), 3tr in same sp; rep from * to last block, sl st in ch sp on last block, turn for next row. This sets patt for dec, cont in dec patt as set in foll color sequence until one block remains:

Yarn D for 1 row. 40 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn C for 4 rows. 36 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn B for 4 rows. 32 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn C for 4 rows. 28 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn B for 4 rows. 24 x 3-tr blocks. Yarn A for 23 rows. 1 x 3-tr block. Fasten off.

FOR THE BORDER

Round 1: With RS facing, using a 6mm (UK 4) hook, join yarn E in first st after any corner, ch1, *1dc in each st to next corner, (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in corner; rep from * 3 more times, join with a sl st in fi rst dc.

Round 2: Ch3 (counts as tr), *1tr in each st to next corner sp, (1tr, ch2, 1tr) in corner sp; rep from * 3 more times, join with a sl st in 3rd of 3-ch.

Round 3: Ch1, *1dc in each st to next corner sp, (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in corner sp; rep from * 3 more times, join with a sl st in first dc. Fasten off.

TOP TIPS

To finish, weave in all ends and block as desired to neaten.

The stitches form blocks, making it easy to keep track of where you are, adding or removing one block from each end of the row. Once you begin decreasing you will be omitting the chain at the start of the row and this reduces the number of blocks per row.
