Sci­en­tists have been work­ing on a nat­u­rally oc­cur­ring en­zyme which can di­gest some of the most com­mon pol­lut­ing plas­tics in a mat­ter of days, as op­posed to the cen­turies it can take for plas­tic to biode­grade nat­u­rally. As the en­zyme ef­fec­tively ‘eats’ up PET, the strong plas­tic com­monly used in bot­tles, if in­tro­duced widely it could rev­o­lu­tionise the re­cy­cling process.
