Travel made easier

-

Getting around isn’t always easy for people with physical or mental disabilities, but help is available. The Disabled Persons Railcard slices a third off rail travel and is specially for people with a disability that makes train travel difficult. You qualify if you get:

✔ Personal Independence Payments (PIP) ✔ Disability Living Allowance (DLA) (higher or lower rate for mobility or higher or middle rate for care component) ✔ Have a visual impairment ✔ Have a hearing impairment

✔ Have epilepsy ✔ Receive Attendance Allowance or Severe Disablement Allowance ✔ Receive War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or War Disablement Pension.

Help is available when travelling by train and you can book to get help at any station. The train company can arrange for someone to meet you, provide a ramp for train access and help carry bags.

Most trains can accommodate wheelchairs but spaces are limited, so book in advance. Some train companies allow passengers to travel with mobility scooters. Check at least 24 hours before travelling.

You may also qualify for a Disabled Person’s Bus Pass. Contact your council to find out who issues them in your area. Help is also available on National Express coaches.

Airports can be stressful places with tight security. Again, it’s important to book

assistance at least 48 hours before you travel. Book directly with the tour operator, travel agent or airline. Airport wheelchairs are available and you may also be able to choose seats near the front of the aircraft. Tell airlines if you would like to take your own wheelchair. There are some restrictions about weight and battery type.

If you are travelling with someone who has dementia, keep their medication with you, allow extra time at the airport and make sure the person is wearing an identification bracelet in case they wander off.

Most people with disabilities can travel, but the key to a successful journey is to plan ahead.
