Hello to my friends lovely Yours friends

I don’t know about you, but these uncertain times are making me reflect on simpler days. I used to tell my dad to stop looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses but now I’m doing exactly the same!

I’ve been casting my mind back to a time when mobile phones, computers and X-boxes didn’t exist, when I wore big knickers and a liberty bodice with white rubber buttons! Back then anyone who had a bright red three-wheeler bike, called the Sunbeam Winkie tricycle, was really posh! I remember listening to the radio with Nana and Granddad before they gave in and bought a television. If I close my eyes I can still smell our coal fire. We’d light it with newspapers held against the chimney breast.

Sorry, I’m overloading you with nostalgia here. All this has come about because I’ve been filming an interview for the 60th anniversary of Coronation Street. It was lovely to be asked to be part of this amazing tribute and I feel very honoured.

Tony Warren, the creator, brought incredible stories, characters and situations to our screens that had never been seen before. My interview included all the characters I was involved with, including Reg Holdsworth of course.

My famous scene with him was us cavorting on a waterbed while downstairs, Mavis and Derek drilled a hole in the roof and burst the bed! In reality we were in an enclosed set on a waterbed, but because of the volume of water, there could only be one take. So as the waterbed supposedly burst (at this point I was under the duvet but Reg was running around the bed with only a towel around his body) Mavis and Derek came through the door, disgusted with the spectacle of it all! Slightly off camera, so only us three could see, Reg dropped his towel then quickly covered himself, but if you ever watch the scene again you will see three ashen faces!

One of my greatest memories is that of Corrie’s Vera Duckworth, played by Liz Dawn. We went to New York together with our families for New Year’s Eve. We had a wonderful time but on the day we had to fly home, there was a huge snow storm. We spent five days at the airport with no food and hardly any water to wash with. The kids loved it. Liz said: “Do you know, our kid, we’re starving, we’ve no make-up, no clean knickers and we’ll probably get the sack for being late back for filming, but I’m loving every minute with you,” and she gave me a big hug. Right now I’m sending you all a big hug, too.
