TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST MONEY

-

■ Research the prices similar stuff sells for, to find out what your belongings are worth. Then set your prices slightly lower if you want to sell quickly.

■ Brand new, big brand items, with tags or in packaging, are likely to raise the most cash. I sold a broken washing machine for a penny for parts, as it cost less than getting the council to take it away.

■ Write accurate, detailed descriptions of your items, including measurements and any damage or wear or tear.

■ Use words in the title that buyers might use to search, such as brand names and colours.

■ Good photos make a big difference. Take decent pics, well laid out and in good natural lighting.

■ Auction sites such as eBay reach the biggest audience and potentially highest prices, but you’ll need to factor in the extra time, selling fees, and postage and packing.

■ On eBay, go for 10-day auctions ending on a Sunday evening to reach the most possible buyers.

■ If you have never sold on eBay before, start off by buying and selling

a few smaller items, to build up your feedback rating before flogging pricier pieces.

■ Sign up for marketing emails from selling sites, then look out for special offers with higher rates, lower fees or ‘refer a friend’ deals.

■ Post off items promptly, always get proof of posting, and use tracked postage for more expensive items.

■ Set up a stall at a car boot sale to clear lots of clutter fast, even if it doesn’t raise the highest prices. Brace yourself for an early start, take loads of change and be prepared to lug home any items that don’t sell.
