Roadwar 2000 SSI
I remember the first time I saw Mad Max. Aged 10, I was far too young, but was still captivated by the sheer speed and viciousness of its desolate world. The Mel Gibson film inspired a love of postapocalyptic media, so when I saw the cover to this SSI strategy game, set in the ‘distant future’ of the year 1999, I couldn’t not include it in this selection. Standing astride a bullet-ridden car, the main figure holds a pair of chains in one hand while wielding a crossbow in the other, improbably riding the vehicle like a horse, seemingly unaffected by the car’s movement. Behind this, a ruined city hints at the disastrous war that has hit mankind as the sun begins to set on this violent scene. A nice touch is the car number plates. One is suitably inscribed with the word ‘Death’ while the vehicle to the left has the artist’s name neatly signed on its plate.
