64. PEDAL THE COCONUT COAST

101 Things to Do (Kauaʻi) - - BEYOND THE CITY -

been compelling, but due to lack of easy access and a developed beach park, COCONUT COAST has long played second fiddle to the more popularized South Shore and North Shore destinations. That perception is changing with the construction of a $30 million BIKE AND WALKING PATH that follows the contours of the scenic coast. The over 4-MILE KAPA‘A SEGMENT of the coastal path, which has already been completed, begins at LIHI PARK on the south side of Kapa‘a and continues past KEALIA BEACH to AHIHI POINT, just past Donkey Beach. A 2.3-mile segment in LYDGATE PARK also is in use. When finished, the pathway will cover 16 miles from AHUKINI (near the Lihu‘e Airport) to ANAHOLA. A cluster of vendors has cropped up along “KE ALA HELE MAKALAE” (Hawaiian for “The Path that goes by the Coast”), making it easy to rent a bike, grab lunch or shop at an outdoor market. Various vendors will rent bikes by the hour, half day, full day or weekly. There also are bikes for kids and trailers for younger children.
