The Future Of Port Charles!
As GH celebrates its 55th anniversary, we sat down with Nathan Varni, ABC’s senior manager of current series, to talk about the show’s past, present and very exciting future!
The In Depth Story: “To be involved with a series that has been on the air for 55 years is such a special honor,” admits the humbled exec. “There’s such a rich history associated with the show, and each time I set foot on our stage, a flood of memories and emotions hit me when I take in the enormity of the over 14,000 episodes that have, for the most part, been filmed at Prospect Studios.”
Looking back at his time with the show, Varni has a specific take on what he believes works well. “Any time we can reach into the history of GH and do a story that makes sense for today, I’m always a fan of it.” He goes on to cite the 2015
plot exploring what had happened in Luke’s past to cause his psychotic break as “some of the finest work of daytime television that I have been a part of.”
So is there a particular piece of Port Charles history he’d love to see the show revisit? “Being a fan of the show since I was a child,” he says, “I am always in favor of bringing legacy characters back and creating fully emotional and relatable stories for them. So from a fan perspective, I would love to see Emma Samms’ Holly return down the road and be involved in a big story with our current cast! I also grew up with Robert Scorpio on my TV screen, so any time our writ- ers pitch an idea with him returning, I’m excited!”
As for the future, Varni believes, “The key to longterm continued success is doing a show that has something for everyone. I want to explore multi-layered stories for characters of all ages and who are at all stages in their lives.”
Finally, Varni has a message for viewers: “We are all forever grateful for your viewership. Without your loyalty, GH would have been off the air many decades ago. It’s been an honor and pure pleasure to be part of this show’s history for the past five years, and I look forward to it continuing for many years to come as we create new memories but never forget our past.”
Robert’s already slated for a visit. Could Holly be next? Varni (inset) would love that!
