Genie Francis has enjoyed a much warmer return to Port Charles than Laura!
After spending the beginning of this year redecorating her new Los Angeles home, painting, knitting, traveling and hanging out with friends in California and Maine, GH legend Genie Francis isn’t just back to work as Laura — she’s already hip-deep in frontburner story! Here, the soap icon, who was signed to GH as a teenager and went on to become a household name, opens up about returning to the fold.
Laura’s Expanding World
When Francis returned to the GH studio this September, she had no trouble settling back into the show that’s been part of her life, on and off, since 1977. “I feel like I’m in the groove, and it happened quicker than I thought,” she marvels. “It’s funny. That place really doesn’t change. The biggest change for me is that Laura has her own apartment — and it is beautiful!”
That fancy apartment also comes with juicy story… and a
serial killer! “It’s starting to get really interesting,” Francis teases of the Kevin/Ryan swap (which, you’ve probably noticed, she discusses at lengths on page 24). “I can’t wait to open up my scripts and see what’s going to happen.”
While Ryan’s new reign of terror promises to be shocking, Francis is also thrilled to find Laura crossing into more storylines than during her last run. “I was in this little pocket of being there to be Lulu’s listener,” she reminds. “And as much as I love Emme Rylan, just getting that one thing to do got boring! So I’m having more fun, because I’m getting to do some stuff that I haven’t before.
“I feel like I matter and I’m definitely back on the show in a real way, not a temporary way,” she adds. “It’s a good feeling.”
Seems Like Old Times
With Laura finding her footing once again in Port Charles, Francis has already flirted with Jon Lindstrom’s Ryan, battled with James Patrick Stuart’s Valentin and crossed paths with some of her favorite old friends. “I’ve enjoyed getting to work with Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis), Kristina Wagner (Felicia), Laura Wright (Carly), Becky Herbst (Elizabeth),” she says. “They’re moving me around to all the people Laura knows — which is great. She lived there all her life, so she’s got deep, long ties.
“These are friendships that have been building on the show for years and years,” she goes on, “so it’s good to see them sometimes!”
Genie’s Message To You
While the actress is excited about Laura’s future in Port Charles, she’s also fueled by the love she received while she was away from GH. “I’m very grateful to the fans for fighting for me the way they did,” she shares. “It was overwhelming, and I was shocked, delighted and moved by it.
“So,” she concludes, “I will do my very best to turn in good work for them!”
“I’m getting somemeaty scenes to play,” says a thrilled Francis.
“I like that I’m getting to work with different people,” says the Emmy winner, here with Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth).
