Maurice Benard (Sonny)
GH’s Maurice Benard (Sonny)
when Santa Claus drops in on GH’s Maurice Benard (Sonny) and his family this year, he’s going to find more than cookies and milk waiting for him — he’s going to find a menagerie big enough to pull his sleigh. “Actually, he might never make it inside,” chuckles the Emmy winner. “Too many dogs! It’s a jungle here!”
Whether Kris Kringle is able to plant his gifts around Benard’s tree and live to tell the “tail,” the daytime icon is still guaranteed to have a merry Christmas: This will be his first since his beloved parents, Humberto and Martha Morales, moved in with him and his beautiful wife, Paula. “It’s been great having them here,” says Benard, who has fond memories of his father playing St. Nick when he was a kid. “The drink in his hand was always a dead giveaway.
“That,” he adds with a mischievous wink, “or Santa drinks whiskey just like my dad!”
Now that the Benards’ children are no longer little kids — daughter Cailey is even engaged — the actor admits that he’s become a little nostalgic about spending the holidays with them as youngsters. “I actually want another baby. But I’m pretty sure I’m too old,” he says with a laugh.
In any case, he and Paula have their hands full as it is. “Paula does everything,” marvels her devoted husband. “She’s like Santa’s whole workshop in one gorgeous package. She decorates the whole house and gets everything ready. “By the time she’s done,” he continues, “it’s magic.” This year, Paula will have some extra help prettying up the place. Cailey’s fiancé, Carlos, “is very strong and a hard worker,” says his future father-in-law. “And he’s always glad to do whatever Paula needs him to.”
Sounds like Benard and his family have their Christmas all wrapped up — with the possible exception of something special on his wish list? Nope. “All I care about is the health of my family and making sure everybody’s happy,” he concludes. “You don’t get what you want, you get what you need.”
A Dickens quote — what a perfect ending to this Christmas story! “Actually,” Benard says, “I got that from the Rolling Stones.”
