United Na­tions Sec­re­tary-Gen­eral Ban Ki-moon ap­pointed Is­mail Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mau­ri­ta­nia as his deputy spe­cial rep­re­sen­ta­tive and deputy head of the United Na­tions Sup­port Mis­sion in Libya (UNSMIL). Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed will also serve as res­i­dent co­or­di­na­tor and res­i­dent rep­re­sen­ta­tive of UN Devel­op­ment Pro­gramme. He brings with him 27 years of ex­pe­ri­ence in devel­op­ment and hu­man­i­tar­ian is­sues and served re­cently as res­i­dent co­or­di­na­tor, hu­man­i­tar­ian co­or­di­na­tor and UNDP res­i­dent rep­re­sen­ta­tive in Syria and Ye­men. He also served as direc­tor of change man­age­ment with UNICEF. Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed re­places Ge­org Char­p­en­tier of Fin­land. The Sec­re­tary-Gen­eral an­nounced the ap­point­ment of Philippe Laz­zarini of Switzer­land as the deputy spe­cial rep­re­sen­ta­tive, res­i­dent and hu­man­i­tar­ian co­or­di­na­tor in So­ma­lia. Mr. Laz­zarini has ex­ten­sive ex­pe­ri­ence in in­ter­na­tional co­or­di­na­tion in con­flict and post-con­flict hu­man­i­tar­ian ar­eas, in­clud­ing in So­ma­lia. Since March 2013, Mr. Laz­zarini has served as the res­i­dent and hu­man­i­tar­ian co­or­di­na­tor and UNDP res­i­dent rep­re­sen­ta­tive. Prior to this as­sign­ment, Mr. Laz­zarini held se­nior po­si­tions in the Of­fice for the Co­or­di­na­tion of Hu­man­i­tar­ian Af­fairs, in­clud­ing as deputy direc­tor (2011 to 2013) and in var­i­ous field po­si­tions in Iraq, An­gola, So­ma­lia and the Oc­cu­pied Pales­tinian Ter­ri­tory.
