The ar­ti­cle on vol­canic ash (Sight­ings, Dec. 2014/Jan. 2015) missed a key point. Pis­ton-engine air­craft can tol­er­ate much higher lev­els of at­mo­spheric ash than other air­craft be­cause they fil­ter the air be­fore it en­ters the engine. Be­cause ex­tremely high lev­els of ash can clog an air fil­ter, all pis­ton en­gines have an al­ter­nate air source to by­pass the fil­ter.
