t Be­fore Apollo 11 launched, NASA needed to be ab­so­lutely cer­tain no ex­tra­ne­ous ob­jects, left over from man­u­fac­ture or stor­age, re­mained in Neil Arm­strong’s moon boots. The X-ray (now in Jurvet­son’s col­lec­tion) es­tab­lished they were clean. Though the im­age was made for en­tirely prag­matic rea­sons, en­gi­neer­ing prac­ti­cal­ity cre­ated some­thing beau­ti­ful.
