Akron police use chemical spray to break up at fight at East CLC Thursday

Akron police used chemical spray to break up at least one fight at East Community Learning Center Thursday.

Police Captain Michael Miller said the first fight at East broke out around 1:15 p.m. while students were playing basketball in the school gym.

Miller said verbal commands and de-escalation efforts were unsuccessf­ul and that officers ultimately “used a chemical irritant/spray to break up [and] disperse the crowd.”

Later, during dismissal, a second altercatio­n occurred that initially involved at least two female students, Miller said.

Miller said no injuries were reported. At least two students were taken to a juvenile detention center.

The school district was not immediatel­y available for comment.

Miller said the police department and school district “are conducting joint reviews of the incident and additional determinat­ions will be made.”

Purses for Pooches Boutique Sale: The Humane Society of Summit County is hosting a sale at Happy Tails Thrift Shop, 1770 Merriman Road, Akron. The a 2007 Nissan Altima lost control, and the vehicle rolled over in the westbound lanes of the highway, the sheriff’s office said.

The vehicle had three adult occupants and four juvenile occupants between the ages of five and seven years old. The adult occupant with severe injuries was transporte­d via helicopter to Hillcrest Hospital.

Another adult was transporte­d to a local hospital, and the third adult did not sustain any injuries.

All four children were transporte­d to Akron Children’s Hospital by the Twinsburg and Remindervi­lle Fire Department­s. The extent of their injuries are unknown.

The Summit Metro Crash Response Team responded to the scene. The crash is still under investigat­ion.
