AKRON - Jean Parish Smith, age 94 and a lifelong Akron resident, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024. Jean was born in Akron on April 8, 1929, to Russell Clayton Parish and Ella Eilleen Hyland. She married Buel S. Smith, M.D., in 1962, embarking on a journey that lasted for 53 wonderful years until Dr. Smith passed away in 2015. Together, they travelled extensivel­y, including a honeymoon trip around the world.

Jean is survived by her son, Leland P. (Talis Haight) Smith of Los Angeles; daughter, Deborah (Daniel) Marquardt of Cincinnati; grandsons: Austin, Connor, Riordon (Sydney), and Taylor Smith, and Matthew and Henry Marquardt; and twin sister, Jane Schwab of Akron.

Jean’s educationa­l journey led her through Old Trail School, Bradford College and the University of Akron, experience­s she cherished. Throughout her life, she was deeply engaged in her community as a member of numerous local organizati­ons, including The Junior League of Akron, Women’s Board of Stan Hywet Gardens, Children’s Hospital Women’s Board, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club, Akron Garden Club, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Her passion for sports, gardening, and reading enriched her life, and she had many lifelong friends in Akron who were very special to her.

A memorial service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held 12 P.M. SATURDAY March 2, 2024, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., Akron.
