Akron City Council approves pick to fill police oversight board seat

Akron City Council voted unanimously to appoint Ericka Burney-Hawkins to the Akron Citizens’ Police Oversight Board on Monday.

City Council President and Ward 3 representative Margo Sommerville said the screening committee felt it was important to pick someone from the same part of the city as Diane Lewis, a Ward 5 resident who stepped down from the board in January.

Sommerville said Burney-Hawkins has a master’s in social work and has lived in the Ward 5 neighborhood for over 30 years, noting she “has a lot of experience working with children and adults — not only just in social services but also in the criminal justice system.”

Lewis cited “unforeseen events” in resigning from the board, which formed last year as a result of the passage of Issue 10 in November 2022.
