1941: The National Urban League presented a one-hour program over a national radio network and urged equal participat­ion for Black people in the national defense program.

1945: The Soviet Red Army stormed into Austria, which had been part of Nazi Germany since it was annexed seven years prior. Intense World War II battles in the streets of Vienna followed, leading to much destructio­n and the Soviets capturing the Austrian capital on April 13, 1945.

1959: The Dalai Lama fled to India from Tibet amid an uprising against Chinese control and fears he would be kidnapped. The Buddhist continued to live in exile for over 60 years while he remained Tibet's spiritual leader.

1963: The debut single by 16-year-old Lesley Gore, “It's My Party,” produced by Quincy Jones, hit No. 1 in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100.

1981: John Hinckley shot President Ronald Reagan in the chest and wounded three others in Washington, D.C.

1986: American actor James Cagney died. His films included “Public Enemy,” “Angels with Dirty Faces” and “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” Cagney won an Oscar for the latter film.

2002: Britain's Queen Elizabeth, aka the Queen Mother, died aged 101. The widow of King George VI and mother of the reigning British sovereign was born in 1900 when Queen Victoria still reigned.

2010: Nissan Motor Co. announced the world's first mass-produced electric car. Nissan released the Leaf later that year. In 2013, Nissan began assembling the Leaf in Tennessee for its North American market.

2017: SpaceX reused an orbital rocket in the world's first “reflight” mission.

2023: Former President Donald Trump became the first leader of the United States to be indicted by a grand jury. The case was over whether he illegally falsified records tied to a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
