Stan Hywet director to discuss ‘Antiques Roadshow’ during Akron Press Club event

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens Executive Director Jennifer Highland will share the inside story of what it was like to host PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow” during the April 9 Akron Press Club luncheon program at Quaker Station, 135 S. Broadway, Akron.

The Public Broadcasting System’s popular “Antiques Roadshow” came to Akron’s Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in June 2023 to tape a series of shows. Three episodes from Stan Hywet will be broadcast by Ideastream Public Media on WVIZ/PBS at 8 p.m. April 29, May 6 and May 13.

Summit County seeks family members of Herman Wyatt, who died recently

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office is looking for family members of Herman Wyatt Jr., 72, who recently died of natural causes.

Wyatt was living in Mayflower Manor Apartments in downtown Akron when he died March 20. He had been homeless off and on for many years. He moved to the Mayflower Feb. 27, said Gary Guenther, the chief investigator for the medical examiner’s office.

If investigators are unable to find relatives of Wyatt, his remains will be cremated as designated as unclaimed. The county stores unclaimed remains with local funeral homes.

AMATS to fund several local road improvement projects

The Summit County Engineer’s Office is planning a major project on South Main Street in Coventry Township that will replace sidewalks and resurface the road from North Turkeyfoot Road to Portage Lakes Drive.

Amy Prater, transportation improvement program coordinator with AMATs, said the project is currently scheduled to start in 2030.

Prater said it’s possible money could become available sooner for the project.

AMATS on Thursday also announced $6.1 million in funding for the reconstruction of State Road between Quick Road and Boulder Boulevard in Cuyahoga Falls. That project could include a roundabout, the agency said.

Another $3.2 million was assigned to a Portage County project along state Route 59, from east of Horning Road to state Route 261.

The project will reconstruct pavement and include various pedestrian, signal, trail, and transit improvements along the corridor.
