McCollum selected for NBA citizenship award

- George M. Thomas

GlenOak High School graduate C.J. McCollum of the New Orleans Pelicans was selected as the winner of the Professional Basketball Writers Association's Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. He becomes the second former Stark County high school basketball star to win the award.

McCollum, one of five finalists — along with Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving, Miami Heat assistant coach Caron Butler, Washington Wizards forward Anthony Gill and Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr. — was chosen based on “outstanding service to the community, focusing on education, social justice reform and efforts to provided equitable resources and opportunities for youth."

McCollum, along with the nonprofit College Beyond started McCollum scholars, a needs-based scholarship that will give 11 New Orleans students $100,000 each to pursue four-year degrees. Additionally, he opened the CJ McCollum Dream Center at the Westbank Boys and Girls Club of Metro Louisiana. Working with the Louisiana Center for Children's Rights and the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition, he visited the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center in New Orleans, spending time getting to know students there.

McCollum was chosen by the 200 members of the PBWA.

“C.J.'s passion, generosity and commitment to improving the lives of the youth in his community is truly impressive,” said PBWA President Howard Beck, of The Ringer, in a statement released by the organization. “The members of the Professional Basketball Writers Association salute him and all the nominees for their inspiring work.”

Former McKinley High School star Eric Snow won the Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2005 when he was playing guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
