Fort Ann holds on for Class D crown
Cardinals’ rally in sixth puts them in front vs. Deposit
Fort Ann held off a late rally from Section IV champion Deposit on Saturday afternoon to claim the Class D state softball championship with a 4-3 decision at Moreau Recreational Park.
The Cardinals (194), who have won eight straight Section II Class D titles, secured their first state championship since winning the second of two straight crowns in 2014, led by pitcher Molly Bailey.
Saturday, Fort Ann trailed 1-0 in the sixth inning of the championship game but jumped in front of Deposit with a two-run double by Kayla Bailey. Becky Ostrander later added a two-run single as the Cardinals led 4-1.
Deposit scored twice in the seventh before Bailey recorded the last out on a pop up.
Fort Ann beat Section III champion Fabius Pompey, 5-2 in 10 innings in the semifinals.
Class A: the promising beginning was followed by minimal productivity as Averill Park’s dreams of a second state title since 2015 were dashed with a 4-1 loss to Section iv power maine-endwell. the Warriors (18-8) scored once and generated three singles in the bottom of the first. After that, Averill
Park mustered up only two more hits. maine-endwell won the title with an 8-0 win over iroquois.
Class C: Section Vi’s Chautauqua Lake ended Greenville’s season with a 2-0 victory in the semifinals. Chautauqua Lake beat Pine Plains 9-3 in the final.
