Fort Ann holds on for Class D crown

Car­di­nals’ rally in sixth puts them in front vs. De­posit

Fort Ann held off a late rally from Sec­tion IV cham­pion De­posit on Satur­day after­noon to claim the Class D state soft­ball cham­pi­onship with a 4-3 de­ci­sion at Moreau Recre­ational Park.

The Car­di­nals (194), who have won eight straight Sec­tion II Class D ti­tles, se­cured their first state cham­pi­onship since win­ning the sec­ond of two straight crowns in 2014, led by pitcher Molly Bai­ley.

Satur­day, Fort Ann trailed 1-0 in the sixth in­ning of the cham­pi­onship game but jumped in front of De­posit with a two-run dou­ble by Kayla Bai­ley. Becky Os­tran­der later added a two-run sin­gle as the Car­di­nals led 4-1.

De­posit scored twice in the seventh be­fore Bai­ley recorded the last out on a pop up.

Fort Ann beat Sec­tion III cham­pion Fabius Pom­pey, 5-2 in 10 in­nings in the semi­fi­nals.

Class A: the promis­ing begin­ning was fol­lowed by min­i­mal pro­duc­tiv­ity as Aver­ill Park’s dreams of a sec­ond state ti­tle since 2015 were dashed with a 4-1 loss to Sec­tion iv power maine-endwell. the War­riors (18-8) scored once and gen­er­ated three sin­gles in the bot­tom of the first. Park mus­tered up only two more hits. maine-endwell won the ti­tle with an 8-0 win over iro­quois.

Class C: Sec­tion Vi’s Chau­tauqua Lake ended Greenville’s sea­son with a 2-0 vic­tory in the semi­fi­nals. Chau­tauqua Lake beat Pine Plains 9-3 in the fi­nal.
