Syndergaar­d gets a painful victory

Pitcher hit by liner in seventh inning, but N.Y. prevails

Noah Syndergaar­d left the game after he was hit by Cesar Hernandez’s line drive in the seventh inning but managed to slow the Philadelph­ia Phillies’ playoff run despite allowing a career-worst 12 hits and five walks in the New York Mets’ 10-5 victory Saturday night.

Syndergaar­d (11-3) tried to brace himself but was hit on the right lower ribs when Hernandez lined a 98 mph pitch. Syndergaar­d picked up the ball but held onto it. The Mets said Xrays were negative.

He matched his career high for walks and allowed four runs in 62/3 innings. yankees 4, mariners 2: Andrew Mccutchen and Austin Romine homered and Lance Lynn and three relievers combined on a four-hitter to lead New York to a victory over Seattle. Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres had sacrifice flies for the Yankees.

Pirates 5, marlins 1: Josh Bell homered for the second game in a row, Ivan Nova got his first victory in a month and Pittsburgh beat Miami for their fifth consecutiv­e win.

nationals 10, cubs 3: Max Scherzer pitched a complete game and Washington took advantage of sloppy Chicago in the opener of a doublehead­er.

reds 7, Padres 2 (7): Joey Votto ended his two-month homer drought with Cincinnati’s 11th grand slam — one shy of the NL record — and the Reds beat San Diego in a game called because of rain in the top of the seventh inning.

athletics 8, rangers 6:

Khris Davis hit his major leaguelead­ing 41st home run, Matt Olson homered to drive in the go-ahead run and Oakland defeated Texas for its fifth win in six games.

indians 9, Blue Jays 8: Roberto Perez homered and drove in four, Michael Brantley hit a two-run shot and Cleveland outslugged Toronto.

tigers 4, cardinals 3: Victor Reyes scored on a game-ending wild pitch with one out in the ninth inning.

rays 10, orioles 5: Ryan Yarbrough struggled but got his 14th win, most among major league rookies, and Tampa

Bay won its 10th straight home game.

angels 12, White Sox 3: Mike Trout homered twice and drove in five runs, and Los Angeles beat Chicago. Trout’s 5-for-5 performanc­e matched his career high for hits in a game and raised his batting average to .314. David Fletcher, Shohei Ohtani and Andrelton Simmons had two hits each for the Angels, who have won four of five.

Brewers 4, Giants 3: Gio Gonzalez received a standing ovation following an impressive first start with Milwaukee, and the Brewers beat slumping San Francisco.

royals 4, twins 1: Kansas City rookie Jorge Lopez came within three outs of a perfect game before Max Kepler walked leading off the ninth inning and Robbie Grossman followed with a single.

rockies 4, dodgers 2: Kyle Freeland pitched six strong innings, Wade Davis worked out of a ninth-inning jam and Colorado beat Los Angeles to remain atop the NL West.

notes: Pirates right fielder Gregory Polanco, the team’s home run and RBIS leader, will miss the remainder of the season because of a bone bruise in his left knee . ... Mets captain David Wright believes he will return to the team this season. The 35-year-old third baseman participat­ed in a simulated game before Saturday’s game against the Phillies. He faced Anthony Swarzak and Tim Peterson and hit an opposite-field homer to right-center off Peterson for his only hit. Wright has not played in a major league game since May 27, 2016, because of neck, back and shoulder injuries that required surgery.
