Celtics hand Pistons first defeat

Brown and Morris pace Boston; Detroit was off to best start in 10 years

Jaylen Brown scored 19 points and Marcus Morris added 18 for the Boston Celtics in a 109-89 victory Saturday night over the Detroit Pistons, who lost their first game of the season.

Andre Drummond had 18 points and eight rebounds, and Stanley Johnson scored a season-high 16 for Detroit, which had won its first four games of the season for the first time since 2008-09.

Daniel Theis added 17 points and eight rebounds for Boston. Jazz 132, Pelicans 111: Ricky Rubio had 28 points and 12 assists, Rudy Gobert had 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Utah became the first team this season to beat New Orleans. The Pelicans played without star forward Anthony Davis (elbow).

76ers 105, Hornets 103: Joel Embiid had 27 points and 14 rebounds while J.J. Redick and Robert Covington each hit key 3-pointers late to lead Philadelph­ia. Kemba Walker scored 37 points for Charlotte, which missed its final four shots.

Bulls 97, Hawks 85: Zach Lavine scored 27 points and Chicago went 7 of 10 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter to pull away. Taurean Prince led Atlanta with 16 points.

Pacers 119, Cavaliers 107: Bojan Bogdanovic scored 25 points, Victor Oladipo had 24 and Indiana kept Cleveland winless. The Cavs (0-6) are off to their worst start since opening the 1995-96 season 0-7. Kevin Love (foot) sat out his second straight game.

Grizzlies 117, Suns 96: Marc Gasol scored 19 points, Mike Conley added 18 and Memphis sent Phoenix to its fourth straight loss. Deandre Ayton led Phoenix with 24 points.

Heat 120, Trail Blazers 111: Goran Dragic scored 28 points, Dwyane Wade and Kelly Olynyk each had 19 and Miami scrambled in the final minutes to beat Portland. The Heat let a 19-point lead slip entirely away, and then found themselves trailing twice in the fourth quarter before outscoring Portland 19-7 in the final 3:52. Dragic’s 3-pointer with just under a minute left all but sealed the win for Miami, putting the Heat up nine.

Bucks 113, Magic 91: Giannis Antetokoun­mpo scored 21 points and Khris Middleton had 18 as Milwaukee beat Orlando. The Bucks have won six consecutiv­e games to start the season, one shy of the record set by the 197172 team.

Spurs 110, Lakers 106: Demar Derozan had 30 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and the Spurs rallied in the fourth quarter, overcoming 35 points and 11 rebounds from Lebron James to beat Los Angeles. The Spurs’ first lead came at 93-91 with 10 minutes remaining when Derozan laid in his own miss after beating three Lakers to the rebound.
