Burnt Hills boys fall in state final
Spartans defeat Eden in semifinals before losing to Bellmore-jfk in title game
The Burnt Hills boys’ volleyball team nabbed a second-place finish in Division 2 at the state tournament on Saturday at Albany Capital Center.
Burnt Hills topped Section VI’S Eden in the semifinal round before Bellmore-jfk of Section VIII ended the Spartans’ hopes for a title in the championship match with a 3-1 victory. Bellmore-jfk won by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 14-25 and 25-20 to claim the Division 2 crown. girls’ volleyball: All five Section II teams were eliminated in the pool play round of the state tournament on Saturday in Glens Falls . ... The morning wave of girls’ volleyball state pool play saw all three competing Section II teams sent home before the championship round. In Class AA, Shenendehowa swept Pine Bush, 25-21, 25-12, and split with Victor, 11-25, 2516, but lost two straight to Long Beach, 23-25, 27-29, to finish 3-3 to miss out on the championship round. Broadalbin-perth dropped all six of its matches to finish outside of the Class B championship. The Patriots lost to Oswego (9-25, 20-25), Bayport Blue Point (15-25, 15-25) and Westhill (16-25, 23-25) to place at the bottom of the group. Finally in Class D, Mayfield lost both matches to Bainbridgeguilford (12-25, 19-25) and split with Panama (29-27, 12-25) and Mount Academy (17-25, 25-20) to finish 2-4 in the group and miss a chance at the championship . ... In the afternoon session, Burnt Hills was eliminated in Class A after a 2-4 record on the day. The Lady Spartans were swept by Cornwall (20-25, 21-25), and tied Wantagh (26-24, 21-25) and Niagara Wheatfield (25-22, 17-25) in pool play. Section II’S final hope of the day was Class C’s Voorheesville. The Blackbirds tied Millbrook, 22-25, 25-21, and dropped two straight to Portville of Section VI, 8-25, 17-25, to sit at 1-3 heading into their final matches of the day. But a twogame sweep of Mattituck lifted Voorheesville to 3-3 and forced a one-game playoff against Millbrook to decide a Class C semifinalist. Unfortunately for the Blackbirds, Millbrook won the do-or-die contest, 25-16, to send all five Section II schools home.
