An ‘I Am Human’ chat with children
Author Susan Verde to speak about mindfulness to Brown students and the community
Best-selling children’s author Susan Verde will speak about mindfulness at Brown School at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Verde will talk to students at the private school in the morning and host a community-wide event in the evening for parents and teachers.
Prior to Verde’s presentation, the school will host a Wellness Fair where local businesses will display products and talk about their areas of expertise.
Verde describes mindfulness as paying attention to one’s life without judgment.
“It’s a way of really connecting in the moment. To know you can pause and breathe and connect to what is happening makes parenting a bit easier and allows me to project less and observe more and it makes the moments in life more fulfilling,” she said. “This is what I wish for kids, to know that life doesn’t just happen to them but that they can choose their responses to things and that they don’t have to become their emotions.”
Her story “I Am Human” became a New York Times best-selling book.
“As a lover of books, I am inspired by the messages Susan conveys through her works,” Brown School Librarian Deborah Wyngowski said.
At Brown School we focus on helping our students to be mindful in everything they do. We actively work with them on this so they can apply it to their lives in many ways.”
Brown School teaches students in nursery through 10th-grade. They have included the concept of mindfulness in their program for several years. It can involve taking time to calm oneself, as well as focusing on the present moment and offering compassion to others.
The school is located at 150 Corlaer Ave.
