Bishop seeks to exploit our era of divisiveness
As a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church of Springfield Center, I disagree with Bishop Rev. William H. Love’s edict to ban gay marriage and I am not alone.
His misdirected and divisive edict is aimed at yet another group to target for hatred. His premise is wrong. Being gay is not a choice. Love himself states that gay people are “struggling with same-sex attractions.”
This statement negates that sexuality is part of who we are and not chosen.
This edict comes at a time when a divisive president has targeted every group that is different, based on religion, skin color, country of origin or sexuality.
Love is correct that the devil is in this, and he has twisted his mind to believe that it is appropriate to use religion for his political advancement. He wants to make a name for himself in the church. It’s clear that this act won’t unite but divide. That won’t strengthen the church or its people. At a time when churches are losing people, we need to unite.
Much of what the Bible focused on was love of ourself and others and helping those in poverty. Jesus became angry and tossed the tables in the temple for the money changers, not the gays. If Jesus were here today, I am quite certain, he would be disgusted with Love’s edict. God’s message is one of love and unity.
