Barzal leads Islanders’ attack

Center scores three times in second period for New York

Mathew Barzal scored a natural hat trick in the second period, Valtteri Filppula had a highlight-reel goal and the New York Islanders beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-0 on Saturday night in their first game against former captain John Tavares.

New York has won six of seven. Robin Lehner made 36 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Ryan Pulock had two assists.

The Islanders pounded the Maple Leafs in a reunion with Tavares, who signed with Toronto as a free agent July 1. The 28-year-old played nine seasons in New York, collecting 272 goals and 349 assists for 621 points in 669 games.

Garret Sparks stopped 24 shots as Toronto’s five-game winning streak was snapped. rangers 4, Predators 3: Jesper Fast scored two goals, including the game winner, and added an assist as New York snapped a three-game losing streak. Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, Marc Stall added a score and Mika Zibanejad had a career-high four assists for the Rangers, who earned their first road win in regulation this season. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves.

Devils 2, hurricanes 0: Rookie goalie Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 37 shots for his first shutout and Pavel Zacha scored shorthande­d for New Jersey. It was the second straight victory for Blackwood, a former Albany Devil, giving New Jersey its first two-game winning streak since Nov. 13-15. Andy Greene added an empty-net goal to seal the win.

Bruins 3, Sabres 2 (ot): Sean Kuraly scored 3:44 into overtime to give Boston a win over Buffalo. Jake Debrusk and Noel Acciari scored in regulation for Boston. Tuukka Rask made 26 saves. Johan Larsson and Marco Scandella scored for Buffalo. Carter Hutton stopped 38 shots.

Golden Knights 4, Kings 1: Malcolm Subban stopped 30 shots to help Vegas beat Los Angeles, ending the Kings’ four-game winning streak. William Carrier, Alex Tuch, William Karlsson and Paul Stastny each scored as the Golden Knights improved to 6-1-3 in their past 10 games.

Sharks 7, oilers 4: Erik Karlsson had a goal and three assists, Logan Couture and Melker Karlsson each scored twice, and San Jose beat slumping Edmonton. Joonas Donskoi and Tomas Hertl also scored for the Sharks, who have won two in a row.

wild 3, Jets 1: Devan Dubnyk stopped 26 shots to help Minnesota beat Winnipeg, ending a season-high five-game losing streak. Defenseman Matt Bartkowski scored in his debut with the Wild, and Charlie Coyle and Eric Fehr also scored.

Panthers 2, Flyers 1: Jonathan Huberdeau scored with 1:06 left to cap a third-period rally and lift Florida over Philadelph­ia. Huberdeau scored his 10th goal by finishing a pass from Aleksander Barkov after Mike Hoffman scored a tying goal on the power play with just less than seven minutes left. Union College star Shayne Gostisbehe­re scored for the Flyers.

Stars 5, red wings 1: Alexander Radulov scored twice and Dallas routed Detroit, a night after the Stars’ front office ripped captain Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin by saying the high-priced forwards were underperfo­rming for a team falling short of expectatio­ns.

Lightning 6, Canadiens 5: Adam Erne scored twice in the third period, including the go-ahead goal with 1:02 left, and Tampa Bay extended its point streak to 14 games.

Capitals 3, Senators 2: Tom Wilson and Tyler Lewington each had a goal and an assist to lead Washington over Ottawa.

Penguins 6, Blues 1: Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists to lead Pittsburgh past St. Louis. The Penguins have won five straight.

Notes: The Islanders placed forward Jordan Eberle on injured reserve due to an upper body injury, and recalled forward Michael Dal Colle from Bridgeport of the AHL . ... Canadiens forward Phillip Danault was fined $5,000 for a dangerous trip against Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad.
